In martial arts, you must be both soft and hard at the same time if you want to maximize energy and power. Part of the body must constrict as another part releases tension. This creates movement. It’s a natural thing that we all do. The difference between the martial artist and normal people is that he attempts to understand what is needed and when. If you can understand exactly which parts of the body needs to be hardened and which needs to be softened at every moment of every day, you will be able to have complete control over the movements of the flesh. This gives the artist great speed and power. No one can completely control the flesh, especially every movement of every day. Therefore, martial arts becomes part of who you are because you are always training with every movement you make in life. If one wants to be a great artist, he has to live the arts.
